Maverick

Maverick

With a career spanning well over a decade, Maverick can lay claim to being one of Malaysia’s hardest working and more diverse DJ. Always been fascinated from an early age on how DJ’s can “play two tracks at the same time”, Maverick has always enjoyed electronic music from the age of 14.

Starting out in the mid 80’s, Maverick early influences were derived from Hip-Hop sound, thus starting his interest in the art of turntablism.

Convinced to take a step further, he entered the Malaysian DJ Open Competition to make up numbers back in 1990 and ended up becoming one of the finalists against club DJs with experience of ten years and more. The interest of entertainment agencies grew after witnessing his technical ability. An offer came in straight after by Juliana’s of London where he was signed as their regional DJ representative of Malaysia.

The years progressed and Maverick continued to enter the Malaysia DJ Open Competition in 1992 and DMC Malaysia (Team Category) in 1996 where he placed first for both competitions. As the founder of the now defunct turntable scratch outfit, Funkadelics, Maverick with two other DJs represented Malaysia for DMC World Championship 1996 in Italy. This has also been recorded in the Malaysia Book of Records for being the first representatives in tandem with two other DJs competed in the DJ competition abroad.

At the same time, Maverick was pushing boundaries of music in the dance scene to become resident at clubs locally and internationally like Palm Grove, Party Box, Rock World, Piccadilly, Roxy, Viva and many more.

Maverick’s achievements do not stop there. In 1998, he was a welcomed addition to the elite DJ line-up for the Closing Party of Commonwealth Games in Bukit Jalil. As if that wasn’t enough, Maverick has also turned his hand to the studio for Ponicanyon, BMG and Indie Works with ever increasing recognition and success. Testament to this are his remix albums for local talents Ziana Zain and Ning Baizura as well as a Techno Album called “FIN”. Aside from his experience in DJing and studio work, Maverick has his fingers in a few more pies besides. PCDJ, D-Vinyl and Denon CD Players are now endorsing him as the brands’ demo DJ of Malaysia.

In Dec 2003, Maverick did a daredevil World Record DJ Mixing Marathon attempt at Rooftop, Sungei Wang Plaza, Kuala Lumpur. He is now an unofficial holder of the World Record for the World’s Longest DJ Set with 79hrs 5mins beating the old record of 72hrs by DJ Martin Boss of United States of America. This historical event has also been added into the Malaysia Book of Records for being the longest spinning DJ in Malaysia.

As a DJ, Maverick is always looking to refine and improve his sound. In addition to his talents with taste in Hip-Hop and House, Maverick’s love for Techno hasn’t ruined other music for him, with his focus on taking his sets in different directions resulting in an open mind.

Currently, Maverick is a resident of FutureJazz.fm who has been throwing Techno events in Malaysia called TechCircuit. TechCircuit was previously held as mid-week sessions at the club Atmosphere, 12SI, Kuala Lumpur and now it is a monthly weekend sessions at the club Station 3, Melaka. He has a reputation for playing no compromise Techno and Electro that breaks from the traditional Techno paradigm, extending its limits and challenging preconceptions. Well known for his highly energised sets, the sounds of Maverick are raw and powerful canvases, which promise far more than the simple satisfaction of recreational urges.

It would completely fair to say that every single person who has come to TechCircuit, from any other clubs, magazines, etc, have all been blown away by the effect he has on the dancefloor. They’ve asked the same question “why isn’t he playing at all the premier league clubs?” To list, Maverick’s other interests in life is to delve into a myriad of diversity!
